Is this because of global warming?

    February 12, 2010 // No Comments »

David and Rejao have been working everyday in my home on editing and finishing the final work of the Study trip. In Iceland and Norway we did not want to spend to much time in front of the computer editing, but use time to collect material and experience. Here in Maputo we have also been collecting interesting material to join with the material from the north.

Here above are some photos from the beach on the way to Costa do Sol. The sea is destroying the trees and the road in one place. Is this because of global warming? We hope to interview professor John Hatton, a specialist in environmental affairs, and we will ask him about this situation by the coast.

Two days in London on the way home

    January 26, 2010 // No Comments »

It is difficult go from Iceland to Maputo in one day, the flight connections are to tight. We had therefore a stop over in London and since we were stopping we decided on spending one extra day there. We got a cheap room for four at the Generator X hostel in Russel Square, the location is the important thing in London not the coziest hotel.

We managed to do plenty in one day. In the morning we walked to Tottenham Court Road for shopping techno stuff; external hard drive, camera gadgets and more. After that it was intellectual stuff; art museums and bookstores. It is a great thing in London that the main museums have free entrance. We began to walk through the National Gallery on the way to south bank and Tate Modern. The national gallery exhibits the history, many of the old masters and the famous pieces that Rejao and David had just seen in the art history books.

After a nice soup lunch on the south bank we went to Tate. There we went through tree big floors of 20th century art. More interesting for the guys, especially David that is working on establishing a contemporary art movement in Maputo called Bantu art.

It is exhausting to go to museums so after Tate we just had to go to the hotel and rest. No energy for a night out in London, just a hamburger in a cozy english pub. And then to the airport early in the morning.

Blue Lagoon on the way to the airport

    January 24, 2010 // No Comments »

The Blue Lagoon is the most visited tourist place in Iceland. It has therefore become an rule for Icelanders to take their visitors there to experience the lagoon like all the other tourists and of course it is quite a nice experience. I prefer the lagoon Dori designed in the north of the country, a more quiet place out in the middle of nowhere, but it is about 7 hours drive from Reykjavik so that was too far.

These five weeks went so fast and suddenly it was the day of departure and we still hadn’t been to the Blue Lagoon. We managed to have a short visit on the way to the airport thanks to Sverrir, Dori’s brother. He was so kind to drive us to the lagoon and then to the airport. The lagoon was very nice and it is off season now so it was not crowded.

    Africa Night in Cafe Cultura

    January 22, 2010 // No Comments »

Poster: Co-design of Goddur, David Aguacheiro, Rejao de Carvalho.

Straight after recording we went home to change and then to Cafe Cultura where David and Rejao had planned an Africa Night. Music and Dance.

The Cirrus conference was invited as well as friends and everyone was welcome. Rejao began the night by singing and playing his songs and did a nice performance. After that they had decided on some traditional singing and dancing. Rejao was to tired after the recording earlier and the playing and did not have energy for the dance so those plans failed, exept for a little dance and clapping game that we did; Rejao, David, Andri and me. So proper african dance has to wait until next time in Reykjavik!

Rejao’s song: Menino da rua recorded

    // No Comments »

One of the side plans for the Iceland trip was to record a song that Rejao made some time ago called Menino da rua (The street boy). On friday the 22nd of January we went to the studio where Raggi (Doris nephew) and his band rehearse and record. Raggi was so kind to offer to record.

Three musicians were recorded, Rejao, Andri and Fanney. And then later Raggi will add on the drums. In Maputo Rejao had asked Andri to make a guitar solo to play in the song which he did, a very nice one I think and they have practiced the song and played together for some months. In Iceland Rejao found the second voice that he needed for the song. Fanney, the daughter of my mothers spouse, that has been singing for some time accepted to sing along. She has a really nice voice and perfect for this song.

David was in charge of video recording and photography, neccecary for the music video production and the graphic design and I was there to assist, buy pizza and coke… and tell my opinion every now and then.

Vala and Emil came by to say hi and give their support and Þorir, Fanneys father stayed around for some time. A lively day and great to see how Rejao is growing as a musician.

Raggi will now mix the song and send us. I look forward to hear the outcome.

    A visit to Goddur

    January 20, 2010 // No Comments »

One of the must do’s for graphic design students in Reykjavik is to visit Goddur. He was my professor when I studied and his way of seeing things is a valuable inspiration. No Bauhaus crap, no rules, grids and guides. His world is the visual language, the atmo, the heart, the magic!

The day after the visit David and Rejao had planned an Africa Night in Cafe Cultura. Goddur of course spottet the importance of ‘showing off’!! “We have to make a poster guys!” …Yeah!…nice they replied. The deal was on that they would make a poster together. David and Rejao would send material to Goddur before 16.00 the day after and he would put together a poster. They took some ‘Africa spirit’ photos and sent. And a great ‘showing off’ poster was made! (see blog about Africa Night)
