The Age of Stupid in ENAV

We were so lucky that Catia, a teacher here in ENAV had contact with Justiça Ambiental, the association taking care of the screening of the film The Age of Stupid here in Mozambique. They were so kind to lend us the film to screen in ENAV so the students had an opportunity to see it. So last thursday in the lunch break the students watched the film and we were quite happy with how many of them showed up.

It is important to raise the awareness of environmental issues among artist and designers because they Artists have the power to communicate the message in a creative way!

Umoja Means Unity in Swahili, Cultural Project Event

    October 7, 2009 // No Comments »

Umoja is a project of a number of countries within culture, mostly dance and music, but this time Soley’s students also created a motivational exhibition for the World Wide Views dialogue meeting that took place here in Maputo. This we have written about before. Last weekend there was the final performance here in Maputo. This was the result of collaborative work done by young people that had been in a workshop here. The project is named North/South and is financed mostly by the Norwegian Government.

This video gives snippets of the event.

Bantuart – New association of contemporary art in Mozambique

    October 4, 2009 // No Comments »

    bantuart

A group of students in ENAV are establishing Bantuart; association of contemporary art. Their focus is contemporary art and social intervention. The website is in the making and the first meetings they have had the last few weeks have been about defining what they are about and the more practical bureaucratic issues. Now they want to work on their first project. The video shows discussions of the Bantuart members about the first project they want to work on.

The project will be a performance about global warming. They are defining the project description, goals and aims to look for a support to buy materials and make the work possible.

    A baptism party

    A babtism party

Yesterday evening we were invited with Rejão, my student, to a party to celebrate the babtism of one of his relatives or friends (one is never too sure). It took place in the family home of Begildo who is also a student in ENAV. We arrived far too late to the party. We came around 20.00 but the party started at 14.00. But parties here in Maputo are all day events often! It was great to be allowed to go there and such an experience for us to get an opportunity to be with the local people. Begildo’s family made us feel very welcome and are definitely generous hosts. Even if we were so late we got nice food and drinks. There were several guys playing guitars and we sat in the garden and listened to nice Marabenta and enjoyed great company.
It is not common to see white people (mulungus)  in the suburbs so there were many people that came to greet us and … take a look at us
